4 Boston at STCPS

Since our Partnership School was established in 2006, we have all seen firsthand how the contributions of Boston College have enhanced our school, and made it possible for us to better serve our students.

Perhaps many are not aware that the contributions of Boston College go much deeper than improvements to the physical plant. Students from Boston College commit to our students, and have added a very human element to the Partnership.

Since September, 33 undergraduate students from Boston College have been volunteering at STCPS through the BC Campus Ministry 4Boston organization. The BC students come to Saint Col’s┬áMonday-Thursday, rain or shine, and some even trudge through the snow. 4Boston volunteers facilitate clubs, tutor students, act as mentors, and in a very meaningful way they embody the “Partner” in “Partnership”.

On Monday, May 9th, our students had an opportunity to thank them, and celebrate their contributions to our after school programs. The 4Boston crew was treated to a dinner of lasagna, pizza, and Caesar salad…all were grateful, as they are preparing for finals and their food plan budgets are depleted! It was a great way for STCPS to say thank you to these amazing mentors and role models.

The 4Boston organization chooses a theme for their service each year, and for 2015-2016 it was based on a prayer inspired by Bishop Oscar Romero:

We plant the seeds that one day will grow.
We water seeds already planted, knowing that they hold future promise.
We lay foundations that will need further development.
We provide yeast that produces far beyond our capabilities.

In recognition of that theme, each 4Boston volunteer received a small flower pot, painted by kids in the Home Economics club, in which was planted a maroon & gold marigold.

4Boston continues to nurture all of our little “seeds” at Saint Columbkille. We look forward to next year’s collaboration with this amazing group of college students, and we wish the BC Class of 2016 all the best!
