In celebration of Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) Heritage Month, Ms. Zani’s music classes have been learning about many different countries and cultures in music class. So far in Asia, they have visited China and Japan.
The students learned about Xian Zhang, a Chinese-American conductor whose musical journey began when she started playing the piano at age three. When Xian Zhang's father could not find a piano to purchase, he built her one himself! Xian Zhang is currently the Music Director for the New Jersey Symphony Orchestra, the first woman to ever hold the position.
In honor of Xian Zhang's story, K2 built their own (paper) pianos and in celebrating the Chinese-American conductor also learned more about origami, the traditional Japanese art of paper folding. Check out photos below!
Ms. Zani’s students are embracing the traditional and the modern in their study of Japan. She has taught them about the famous folk song Sakura, as well as enjoying the stylings of Japanese-American DJ Steve Aoki.
