On Friday, October 21, Saint Cols Grade 7 students participated in an erg rowing relay at Community Rowing on the Charles River. The event took place just before the big Head of the Charles annual regatta that weekend. The 7th graders, along with Loyola teacher Mr. DeVito, Student Support Coordinator Ms. McShane and PE teacher Ms. Baker got to partake in an erg relay of 4900m, which is the same the length of the Head of the Charles rowing race.
Community Rowing has partnered with BPS schools as well as Saint Cols to have an in-school program where a coach comes in to school to teach students how to row on an erg machine. Grades 4-8 will participate in the program. The plan is to have the coach come in for a month-long program to teach students the basics of rowing, including technique, as well as learning about power, stroke rate, etc. The goal of the program is to have students learn about the fundamentals of rowing and spark an interest to get out on the water!
"It was a great day for the 7th grade to see some of the Head of the Charles action," says Ms. Baker. "Everyone had a fun time and we're looking forward to having Community Rowing back in the spring for more!"
