This year’s Veterans Day Ceremony, held on November 8 at St. Columbkille Parish, paid special tribute to alumna Mary Ellen Donahue ‘66, one of the first women to serve as a US Air Force pilot. Donahue’s pioneering achievements and dedication to service inspired all in attendance. During the ceremony, former head of school Mary Battles presented her with a commemorative plaque, recognizing her as a trailblazer and role model. Donahue’s heartfelt remarks emphasized the courage and perseverance of those who serve and the importance of honoring veterans' sacrifices.
This year’s event, chaired by Ali Del’Romero-Hughes and Kelly Hilton, celebrated both the legacy of alumni veterans and the contributions of current families and community heroes. The ceremony, a cherished annual tradition, brought together students, families, and local veterans and first responders to reflect on the significance of Veterans Day. Highlights of the program included a reading of the original poem Veterans are Superheroes by fifth grader Gabriella O’Connell. Gabriella’s eloquent words deeply moved the audience, offering a powerful expression of gratitude and admiration for the sacrifices made by veterans.
The ceremony also showcased the school’s ongoing commitment to service. Members of the student-led service club presented a $568 donation to Brighton Marine, a local organization that provides housing, healthcare, and employment support for veterans and their families. This contribution, raised during a recent school spirit day, reflected the school community’s dedication to supporting those who have served. Brighton Marine representatives expressed heartfelt appreciation for the partnership and emphasized its importance in their mission.
Music added a powerful layer to the event, with the school chorus, led by Ms. Kiara Zani, performing “Proud of Our Veterans,” and attendees uniting for the National Anthem. From the blessing of the flag to the procession of veterans, the ceremony was a heartfelt tribute to those who have protected our country.
Saint Columbkille Partnership School’s Veterans Day Ceremony continues to serve as an opportunity to honor the service and sacrifice of veterans, educate students about the values of gratitude and patriotism, and strengthen the bonds of the community.
